HONOURING THE CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE OF THE REEF
The Great Barrier Reef Exhibition, created in partnership with UNESCO, Google Arts & Culture and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
Explore the breathtaking beauty and cultural significance of the Great Barrier Reef in this online exhibition. Created for the partnership between UNESCO and the Google Arts & Culture platform, the Reef exhibit was curated by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and is dedicated to highlighting the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Great Barrier Reef, where Traditional Owner narratives and custodianship are critical to the conservation of this ecosystem.
We thank the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation, Goondoi Aboriginal Corporation and Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation for sharing their imagery with the online exhibit.
Since 2012, Google has partnered with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to bring virtual tours and exhibits of World Heritage properties to people worldwide. This has included renowned sites like Mount Kilimanjaro, the Taj Mahal, and Yosemite National Park. The Great Barrier Reef exhibition is a continuation of this effort, enhancing cultural education and preservation awareness.
Launched in conjunction with UNESCO’s #ShareOurHeritage campaign, this exhibition not only highlights the Great Barrier Reef’s unique ecosystem but also underscores the critical role of Traditional Owners in its preservation. Their stories and custodianship are integral to understanding the deep connections between the Reef and its Traditional Custodians.
