AN INTERVIEW WITH
KI-SHAUN FEJO
Goondoi Community Research Assistant Officer for the Strong Peoples-Strong Country pilot program
In this insightful interview, Ki-Shaun Fejo delves into the heart of the Strong Peoples-Strong Country pilot project.
Strong Peoples-Strong Country is an inclusive framework grounded in Traditional Owner perspectives and values. The framework monitors the health and condition of the Great Barrier Reef, and how inter-connected these values are to the quality of life for Traditional Owner communities around the Reef. It reflects social, cultural, health, economic and environmental aspects, as well as the land and sea Country that Traditional Owners have a cultural connection, responsibility and obligation to care for.
Ki-Shaun brings a unique perspective on how the program nurtures the important relationship between community well-being and caring for Country. With a framework that weaves together Traditional Owners’ knowledge with contemporary environmental strategies, the project demonstrates the positive impacts of these two knowledge systems. Here, Ki-Shaun shares his perspective on how this project benefits the community and the Reef.
