Towards the end of September, the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) held its first ever TUMRA Youth Camp, bringing together young people from six Saltwater Groups—Djiru, Gulngay, Girramay, Bandjin, Warrgamay, and Nywaigi—on Djiru Country at Bingil Bay. This transformative event aimed to connect young Mob with their culture and strengthen their understanding of Country, leadership, and teamwork.
The camp, which ran from September 23rd to 25th, was designed for youth aged 13 to 17 years. It offered a unique platform for cultural exchange, traditional activities, and interactive learning. Throughout the three days, participants engaged in hands-on experiences that enriched their knowledge of their heritage while also fostering essential leadership and teamwork skills.
Traditional Knowledge sharing and interactive learning
Led by Elders and cultural mentors, the camp focused on passing down cultural knowledge through immersive and interactive activities. The youth participated in storytelling, bushcraft, and traditional practices designed to deepen their connection to the land and sea Country. These experiences encourage young Mob to understand their role as custodians of Country, ensuring the continuation of cultural practices for future generations.
Building leadership and teamwork
A key aspect of the camp was the focus on leadership development. Activities were designed not only to teach cultural knowledge but also to promote leadership and teamwork among the youth. By working together on various challenges and cultural projects, the participants learned the value of collaboration, resilience, and responsibility—important skills that will serve them in future roles within their communities. Amongst the learning and exchange there was plenty of space for fun as many of the young ones embarked on diving, swimming and engaged in stories by the campfire.
The TUMRA Youth Camp was a stepping stone toward building a strong future for these young leaders. By fostering a sense of pride in their cultural identity and equipping them with practical leadership skills, the camp ensured that these young people would be ready to perhaps take on roles as future custodians of Country.
A path for future generations
This inaugural event marked the beginning of what the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation hopes will be a long tradition of empowering youth through cultural and environmental custodianship. By providing opportunities for young people to connect with their culture and develop their identity as well as the skills needed to lead, the GAC TUMRA Youth Camp is laying the foundation for future generations of strong, knowledgeable, and capable leaders. Stay tuned for more stories and insights as these young leaders take their next steps in caring for their Country and culture and find out more at Girringun Aboriginal Corporation.
